Q&A with NATHAN X: Drag meets DnB

16th August 2023

We sat down with Nathan X, the creator of Unorthodox, the UK’s leading queer drum & bass movement, ahead of their set at Becky Hill's You / Me / Us Pool Party earlier in the summer, to find out what's on their rider, why they love the genre so much, and their go-to dance moves.

what do you love most about dnb?

It’s the energy! It’s just always next level when you put it on. Everyone absolutely loves it, it’s insane. I love the progression of the music, how it’s evolved so much in the last few years and how it’s finding common spaces in places like Ibiza, even Ibiza Rocks.

I just love being involved in the genre, being a DJ and getting stuck into the music wherever and whenever.

what is drag culture’s national anthem?

Drag culture and just general queer culture, there’s one artist that always comes to mind and that is… Britney Spears. What is queer music without Britney Spears? And to be specific, her song Toxic. There’s also a banging Drum & Bass remix that I’ve been dropping in my sets all summer.

WHAT’S YOUR GO TO DANCE MOVE BEHIND THE DECKS?

Oh it depends on the vibe and the music that I’m going with but I kind of like a little body rock or the gun fingers are always in there. You’ll have to come to one of my shows to see them in action.

what’s on your rider?

Well it varys, definitley a bottle of spirit. It’s been gin at the moment but it changes depending on how I’m feeling, sometimes a cheeky bit of vodka. But for today, we’re getting a bottle of Moët because you’ve got to celebrate after a show haven’t you?

And most importantly, a Lost Mary vape. I could not be DJing without a Lost Mary vape.
